2007 Scholarship Winners
The New Leaf Market Board of Directors and Scholarship Committee are pleased to announce the winners of this year's scholarships. The 9th annual New Leaf Market/Matthew Tansey Memorial Scholarship for health, healing and nutrition goes to Greg Watterson, Della Parker-Hanson and Jan Dzurik. Five hundred dollars will go toward supporting each of their educational endeavors.
Greg Watterson is transitioning to a new career. Even though he used to work on a management level for several organizations and corporations, he has always been an active participant in physical fitness, wellness and preventive healthcare. He was recently certified as a pilates instructor. Greg is attending the Core Institute School of Massage Therapy and plans to specialize in restorative massage, which includes therapeutic, pain-relief, relaxation and sports massage modalities.
Della Parker-Hanson seeks to broaden her yoga training to encompass teaching children by attending the Stephanie Keach Children's Yoga Teacher program in Asheville, North Carolina. Currently, she teaches an adult yoga class at the local library. She is a former preschool teacher, now has a young son of her own, and wants to create a local yoga program for children possibly funded through grants. Della feels that yoga would help the young students understand and succeed in their true desires, and as one of her nominators put it, attain a "peaceful balance."
Jan Dzurik is a math teacher at Leon High School and sponsors an after-school yoga club. She feels yoga can have a positive influence on the students' lack of attention and focus, anxieties, and poor posture - to name but a few. She would like to make yoga a daily class within the health curriculum. She also teaches students at the Prana Power Yoga studio. Jan will attend the Discovery Yoga Teacher Training program in St. Augustine this summer to become a certified teacher of the healing experience of yoga.
The 2nd annual New Leaf Market/Bryce Buchanan Memorial Scholarship goes to Allison Shir and Courtney Asztalos.
Allison Shir is a dance major at FSU. She is an apprentice coach in the dance department and trains dance majors in pilates to enhance body strength, awareness and control. She also appreciates the connection between nutrition and general well-being for attaining maximum potential in movement. She enjoys yoga and gyrotonics as well. Allison plans to be a professional dancer and pilates coach. She is currently interning at Sue Carpenter's studio.
Courtney Asztalos is a second-time recipient of the Bryce Buchanan Memorial Scholarship. She is completing core requirements at FSU and hopes to receive a bachelor of fine arts degree in spring 2008, with a minor in business. She enjoys drawing, painting, sewing and photography. Her goal is to continue on into a graduate program to be a professional photographer. She was a friend of Bryce Buchanan.
We thank all of this year's applicants for taking the time to apply. We encourage them to continue applying. We wish every one of them much success in their endeavors!
