Fair Trade, the Gift that Keeps on Giving
Natural Times-November/December 2007
By Chris Terrell, Merchandising Manager
Here at New Leaf Market we strive to carry fair trade items whenever possible, giving them priority in the store. Listed below are some of the great gifts we will be carrying this holiday season.
- Woven scarves, crafted in rural India through a three-step process called "tana-bana." The production of these scarves is providing much needed employment for the disadvantaged-when it comes to fair trade, the sky is the limit for the potential it offers.
- Silk bags crafted by landmine and polio victims and other disadvantaged artisans in Cambodia.
- Chocho seed necklaces crafted at a family operation outside Bogotá, Colombia. These necklaces contain the building blocks of change for a whole community, and provide long-term employment. Crafted from natural and renewable materials, this jewelry makes a minimal impact on the environment, but has a meaningful one on its makers.
