Off To a New Start
What an experience the last year has been! Keeping the store stocked and operating throughout three phases of construction was nothing less than a miracle. I want to thank all of you for your support of our staff who endured many difficult challenges during construction.
As part of the planning process for the expansion, we prepared for a decrease in sales due to the inconveniences of construction and the temporary reduction of products. Not only did sales hold steady, they grew, and we were even able to send out a small patronage rebate to our owners— a very positive sign. It’s with this optimistic end to the year that we look forward to our Grand Re-opening celebration on January 17 and 18. Please come celebrate our new store, the community that supports us, and the delicious food we all enjoy.
For those of you who may be reading our newsletter for the first time, here is a little history. Our cooperative, then known as the Leon County Food Co-op, opened in 1974 on Gaines Street. After struggling in that location we moved to our present location, in 1989, and renamed ourselves New Leaf Market. Over the years we have grown and prospered and are the only full service, locally-owned and operated cooperative in our region. We pay a livable wage and offer excellent benefits to over 95 employees. In an effort to educate the community about healthy foods and lifestyles, we offer an extensive seminar program—all of which are free in January and February—in addition to visiting local schools, health fairs and businesses.
You don’t have to be an owner to shop at New Leaf Market, but ownership is easy and it does have its perks. For a refundable fee of $100 you can participate in all the great advantages of being a New Leaf Market owner.
