Stay Hydrated, Add Electrolytes

By Chris Terrell, Merchandising Manager

It’s easy to get dehydrated in the summer, especially in the south with our high humidity/high temperature combination. Staying hydrated is important, but sometimes drinking water just isn’t enough. It’s equally important to make sure that your body has the electrolytes that it needs.

Electrolytes are minerals that the body needs in order to function properly, mainly to assist nerve transmissions to your heart and other muscles. Major electrolytes found in the body include sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, phosphate and sulfate. All are important for different reasons. Specifically, calcium is essential for proper muscle contraction. When you sweat your body looses these important minerals. Many sport drinks contain electrolytes to replenish what is lost during exercise. However, some of these drinks also contain high amounts of sugar and calories, which you may not want. Luckily there are lower-sugar alternatives.

Title Beverage has an electrolyte drink that is only 30 calories per serving and is sweetened with cane sugar and stevia. Alacer makes single serving electrolyte powder packets that are calorie free and can be added to your beverage of choice. So, remember to make sure and stay hydrated and keep your electrolytes up during the hot summer months!
